Aloha and Happy New Year!

We hope you are doing well, surviving this school year, and staying safe with your loved ones. Here on the Community Engagement team in San Diego we are all aflutter and laser focused on updating curriculum and preparing for the long awaited Hawai‘i Teacher Workshops in Conservation Science! We have two exciting pieces of news to share with you, our Teacher Workshops alumni, about this program:

1) We’re growing! We will be hosting two workshops this spring, one on Hawai‘i for middle school educators, and one on Maui for middle and high school educators at the Maui Bird Conservation Center – the first one ever!

2) As of this week we have officially had a course for this workshop approved through the HI DOE PDE3 system, so those who are interested can now register for three PD credits. It took 3-4 years and loads of on-island support, and we couldn’t be more grateful! Special thank you to Principal Glenn Gray of Holualoa Elementary School for being our sponsor, and Whitney Aragaki for sharing all of your expertise and materials. We could not have done it without your help!

These workshops will take place during Spring Break in March 2022. As alumni of Teacher Workshops in Conservation Science you are crucial partners in our mission to create a world where all life thrives, and the most important tool this professional development program has for recruitment. We are grateful for your help in passing along the application for these workshops to your middle and high school teacher colleagues on Hawai‘i Island and Maui.

Maui Bird Conservation Center Teacher Workshops in Conservation Science – middle and high school educators – March 12-15th

Hawai‘i Teacher Workshops in Conservation Science – middle school educators only – March 17-20th

More info about the workshops, flyers, and info for alumni can be found at our website: https://science.sandiegozoo.org/teacherworkshops.

Special consideration is given to those who apply by January 30th!

How can we support you?

Let’s continue our partnership in person this March! If you are interested in sharing something that came from your Teacher Workshops experience with the 2022 participants during the workshop, please reach out. We all know how valuable it is to hear from folks who’ve done it before, and it would be great to see you all again! We can also work together via the Wildwatch Kenya School Challenge (coming this fall), and kit reservations. We still have available reservations April-June. Don’t forget you have access to all our modules and resources via Google Drive too, which soon will all be updated! Email us at TeacherWorkshops@sdzwa.org if you have any questions or ideas.
